As a young pianist I was usually the single minority in the room. Whether it was being the only black student my piano teacher had or being only the one of four music piano students in competitive settings. When I was young I thought it didn't affect me but it did. I suddenly became more socially shy and nervous because I was the only elephant in the room.
It wasn't until my grandmother placed me with a black piano teacher in my teenage years and suddenly it felt like home. She was an older woman, just like my grandmother and she always gave me food at piano lessons. A child will hardly ever turn down some food even if they are full; at least I didn't.
That same piano teacher told me that teaching music is a job for life and that's what I became! If I did not have that representation as a teen, I would not have believed in myself enough to think I could actually teach piano with great passion as I do today. Children can easily become riddled with self doubt and that's why representation most certainly matters as it provides necessary hope for future generations!
I created Black Music Educators & Performers of Omaha because many residents and educators such as myself are looking for representation in various professions in order to feel edified and supported. Positive self-images helps one feel confident of their abilities and encourages the individual to pursue the passions their heart desires.
Our missions is to bring forth collaboration, community, and visual inclusivity to residents of Omaha, NE. It is the desire of the BMEPO to uplift the advancement of society as a whole and create limitless hope through representation that will can ignite future opportunities for the black community.
Members will meet up via Zoom bi-weekly and will also meet up for a group event.
